About the Program

The SLaT MA program uniquely prepares students with second language teaching skills that are based on sound teaching theories that build on and go beyond the scientific study of language. The focus is on teacher preparation, which is in great demand in today’s society. This master’s program will assist second- and foreign-language teachers in improving their professional qualifications and advance in their profession. There is a specific need for teachers who are prepared to teach less commonly taught languages, such as Chinese and Arabic; this program helps to satisfy this need. The SLaT program also prepares students for continued study in Ph.D. programs in foreign language education and eventual entry into academia.

The governance model of the SLaT program actively involves the participation of the college’s foreign language and linguistics departments, i.e., members from those departments make up the SLaT Advisory Committee.
